I heard that lessons are boring, is that true?
With teaching, I have a very basic philosophy.
Learning MUST BE FUN!!!
What can I teach you?
I believe that as a teacher, I can give students a comprehensive understanding of what the instrument can do and how, by regular lessons and practice. This way students will begin to “hear” their unique voice on the instrument. As a teacher, I feel that finding out what the student actually wants to learn is my “starting point”. As I am primarily a jazz and blues musician, I focus on giving the student the basics of both mediums of music.
I do this by breaking my lessons into 4 areas:
- Understanding the fundamentals of your instrument, covering areas such as breathing, posture, comfort, tone, etc.
- Technical work, dealing with scales, patterns, basic harmony and putting it all together.
- Playing, putting the concepts and theory of the technical works into practice. Breaking down melodies and what their relationships are with chord patterns. Starting to improvise!!!
- A vitally important element of my teaching is encouraging students to listen to a wide variety music featuring the instrument they are learning.
This ensures that they are giving themselves ample opportunity to “hear” their instrument.
In summing up, learning any instrument is a fantastic opportunity and can be a pretty amazing journey and taking the first step can as simple as dropping me an email.
Yours in music,
James Cox
